In Beijing, the legendary snowboarding career of Shaun White has finally come to an end. The three-time Olympic gold medalist known as the Shuan White failed to reach the podium in Friday’s halfpipe final of men, after the final run and falling in his third. Ayumu Hirano of Japan, Scotty James of Australia, and Jan Scherrer of Switzerland won gold, silver, and bronze, succeedingly.
Into second place, a strong second-run score of 85.00 saw a White move, then only 2.25 points behind Jan Scherrer of Switzerland. But James and Hirano passed them both and are posted second-run scores of 92.50 and 91.75. White scored 72.00 in his first run.
Shaun White is three times gold medalist in four different Gameshoped to become the second Winter Olympian to win gold. To do so, this was White’s last chance, as he’s retiring after Beijing from competitive snowboarding.
In Wednesday’s qualifiers, White reached the final after an uneven performance. After scoring an 86.25, the five-time Olympian fell during his first qualifying run, but he managed to advance in run No. 2. Behind only Hirano, James, his second-run score ranked, and Ruka Hirano of Japan.
